Dwarka (Gulf of Kutch, Gujarat, India) is the most archaeologically documented submerged site in South Asia. The Marine Archaeology Centre of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) under S.R. Rao (1922–2013) conducted underwater surveys beginning in 1983, identifying stone anchors, dressed limestone blocks, a semicircular stone structure (interpreted as a fortification wall), and pottery at depths of 6–12 meters offshore from modern Dwarka. Rao dated the submerged structures to ~1500 BCE (Late Harappan/post-Harappan period) based on ceramic typology and thermoluminescence dating of associated pottery, though he noted that the site has deep cultural resonance as the legendary capital of Krishna in the Mahabharata. Yonaguni Monument (Yonaguni Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, ~25 meters depth) — a massive submarine rock formation discovered by diver Kihachiro Aratake in 1986 — is the most controversial of all submerged "structures." Masaaki Kimura (marine geologist, University of the Ryukyus, now emeritus) has argued since 1997 that the formation shows evidence of human modification: right-angle steps, flat terraces, a triangular depression ("pool"), apparent road-like features, and what he interprets as carved faces and a "sun stone." Kimura proposed a human construction date of ~8000–10,000 BCE when the site was above sea level. However, Robert Schoch (Boston University), who dived the site in 1997, concluded that the formations are natural — the product of the well-bedded sandstone's tendency to fracture along orthogonal joint planes, producing naturally geometric shapes. Patrick D. Nunn (University of the Sunshine Coast, 2009, Vanished Islands and Hidden Continents of the Pacific) concurred that natural geological processes adequately explain the formations. Heracleion/Thonis (Abu Qir Bay, Egypt, ~6–7 meters depth) was discovered by Franck Goddio and the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM) in 2000 — a major Egyptian port city dating to the 7th–2nd centuries BCE, mentioned by Herodotus and Strabo. The site yielded 64 ships, the remains of a temple to Amun, colossal statues, gold coins, bronze figurines, and a stele with the Decree of Naucrates (confirming the city's identity). Subsidence from Nile Delta sediment liquefaction (triggered by earthquakes and flooding) caused the city to sink in the 2nd century BCE.
