Natural dyes — Tyrian purple (from Bolinus brandaris mollusks), indigo (from Indigofera plants), cochineal (from Dactylopius coccus insects), and madder (Rubia tinctorum) — were among the most valuable trade commodities of the ancient world, rivaling metals and spices.
