David Killick has articulated the most rigorous skeptical position, arguing that many early dates for African iron smelting are unreliable due to methodological issues (charcoal from old wood, poor stratigraphic control, or uncertain association between dated material and metallurgical residues). He has called for direct dating of slag using thermoluminescence or other methods. Thilo Rehren and Shadreck Chirikure have also emphasized the need for more systematic archaeometallurgical analysis across the continent before sweeping claims about African chronological priority can be accepted. However, even the most conservative assessments accept that sub-Saharan African iron smelting is at minimum contemporary with, and not derived from, Near Eastern ironworking.
