(Nature, 2016) established that the hominin skeletal remains at Liang Bua are 60,000–100,000 years old, while the associated stone tools extend to approximately 50,000 years ago. This means H. floresiensis survived on Flores until approximately the time modern humans arrived in the region — raising the dramatic possibility of interaction or competition between the species. Older evidence of small-bodied hominins on Flores has been found at Mata Menge (approximately 700,000 years ago, mandible and teeth described by van den Bergh et al., Nature, 2016) and Wolo Sege (approximately 1 million years ago, stone tools), establishing a lineage of over 700,000 years of hominin presence on Flores.
