The primary unresolved debate concerns ancestry: H. erectus dwarfism vs. a more primitive ancestor. The brain-to-body ratio remains anomalously small even by island dwarfism standards. The lack of DNA preservation (tropical conditions destroy ancient DNA) means molecular phylogenetics cannot resolve the question — attempts at ancient DNA extraction from LB1 have failed. The disappearance of H. floresiensis around 50,000 years ago coincides with H. sapiens expansion, raising questions about competition, resource displacement, or direct conflict.
